Lake Norman, created as part of the construction of Cowans Ford Dam by Duke Energy in the early 1960s, is the largest manmade body of fresh water located entirely within North Carolina. Lake Norman is fed by the Catawba River. In addition to providing electricity to the Piedmont region of the Carolinas, Lake Norman als is a popular destination for fishing, boating, sailing, swimming and other water sports and activities.
