Exactly 2,997 flags (one for each victim of 9/11) were placed in the shape of the Twin Towers near downtown Charlotte in September 2009 in memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The flags for "Flags of Remembrance," placed on Sept. 9, 2009, were coordinated by the Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation. Coakley was a firefighter on FDNY Engine 217 who died on 9/11.
