Surrounded by the Cherokee National Forest, the vast majority of Watauga Lake's shoreline and surrounding mountains is undeveloped and pristine. Even during busy holiday weekends (photo taken on Easter weekend 2011) the large lake is rarely busy with boaters. Photo shows Pioneer Landing Marina and Resort.
