Duke Energy had five plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PhEV) and plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) charging stations in 2010 as the company studied the technology and impact of PEVs on the electric grid. PEVs use electricity stored in a battery to move the wheels. The vehicles being tested by Duke achieve 100 mpg and more.
